Navasadhana Pre-Novitiate

Navasadhana, meaning “new path,” is the pre-novitiate programme of the Karnataka Jesuit Province for young men discerning a vocation to become Jesuit priests or brothers. It is the first formal stage of Jesuit formation, offering a sacred space for discovery, prayer, and preparation before entering the novitiate.

Rooted in the Ignatian tradition, Navasadhana invites candidates—often called Navasadhanites—to listen deeply to God’s call. It is a journey of discernment where faith is deepened, interior freedom is nurtured, and hearts are shaped for mission in the Society of Jesus.

Formation and Way of Life

Over the years, the programme has functioned from different centres, with its present location in Anekal, and earlier roots in Bangalore and Hassan. Alongside spiritual formation, candidates pursue their academic studies at St. Joseph’s Pre-University College, Anekal.

Life at Navasadhana integrates academic seriousness with deep spiritual formation. Through Ignatian prayer, reflection, and guided discernment, pre-novices grow in clarity of vocation and readiness for the next stage of formation. Community life lies at the heart of this journey, fostering fraternity, responsibility, and shared growth in the Jesuit spirit of companionship.

Holistic Formation

Navasadhana emphasises holistic formation—spiritual, intellectual, emotional, and personal. Structured inputs and programmes include:

·         Scripture and faith formation

·         Jesuit life, history, and spirituality

·         Affective maturity and personal integration

·         Communication skills and pastoral sensitivity

·         Music, creative arts, and other personal skill development

Creative celebrations, Ignatian feasts, and community events enrich daily life and strengthen a sense of belonging and joy.

Apostolic Exposure

Apostolic engagement is an essential dimension of formation at Navasadhana. Outreach programmes, village exposure, social awareness initiatives, and vocation camps enable the pre-novices to encounter God in real-life contexts, especially among the poor and the marginalised. These experiences help them recognise the inseparable link between faith and justice.

A Doorway into Jesuit Life

The pre-novitiate serves as a gradual transition from lay life into the more structured formation of the novitiate. It allows time for mutual discernment—both for the candidate and for the Jesuit community.

In essence, Navasadhana is the doorway into Jesuit life, preparing young men to move forward with maturity, generosity, and a deep desire to serve God and God’s people in the mission of the Society of Jesus.
